A BURIAL RITE OF THE ROMANS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE ANCIENT SOCIETY CONCEPTION OF THE SOUL

Дана стаття присвячена уявленням античного суспільства щодо зв’язку між поховальним обрядом та існуванням душі у потойбічному світі. Встановлено, що потойбічний світ римляни сприймали як фізичну реальність, що дає притулок душам померлих. Гідно прожите життя давало душі надію на достойне існування після смерті. Сприяв цьому належним чином проведений поховальний обряд. І жінок і чоловіків ховали за однаковим обрядом, або через кремацію, або через захоронення у землі. З’ясовано, що інколи вибір між кремацією і захороненням залежав від традицій, що склалися у тому чи тому роді, або від матеріального становища родини померлого. Є підстави говорити про виникнення особливої форми поховальної церемонії за принципату, зокрема, коли мова йде про поховання імператорів. Водночас, у римському суспільстві існувала також думка про те, що після смерті душа гине разом з тілом.
